June 7, 2007 on 10:43 pm | In SOC Business, Acts Of Kindness | No CommentsKody Bateman is the founder and CEO of SendOutCards. Everything that I’m learning about Kody is telling me that I have indeed found a business that is worth its weight in gold. The values and beliefs of Kody and SendOutCards are so very much like my own, and I’m looking forward to the day when I can personally thank Kody for the opportunity that he has provided me with.
I recently heard about Kody’s father, and one of the truly giving things that he used to do.
“My dad always carried several hundred dollars in a money clip so he could perform random acts of kindness to people in need. This inspired me, his son, to carry a money clip with $1,000.00 in it so I could do the same thing.”
Whenever the Bateman family went out for dinner, Mr. Bateman would choose a family at random and pay for their dinner. Kody now does the same thing. Can you imagine receiving a random act of kindness like that? Even better, can you imagine the feeling of giving a gift like that?
One day I hope to be able to do the same type of thing, but for now I’m sending out random acts of kindness in the form of greeting cards to unsuspecting recipients. You just never know when you might receive an unexpected card
The biggest thing is, and it’s so true - is that you have to give just to give. Don’t give with the expectations of receiving something back. It just doesn’t work that way, nor would I ever want it too!

Unfortunately, I lost my own Dad 10 years ago but that doesn’t mean I won’t be sending out a bunch of cards! I’ll be sending personalized Fathers Day cards to my Father In Law, and both of my husband’s GrandFathers, in addition to my brother (who also happens to be a Dad).

Collect That Contact Information
May 25, 2007 on 11:00 am | In Relationship Marketing | No CommentsLast week I sent one of my colleagues, and a member of WahmsUnited.com a special greeting card, with her website logo on the front cover. Here’s the image that I created for the front cover:
Heidi was thrilled with the card, and yesterday I had the pleasure today of speaking to Heidi. Heidi is a terrific lady that is helping others to build businesses selling boutique baby and children’s clothing, and is always talking to her own members about relationship marketing, however it turned out that she hasn’t been following her own advice.
This became clear when she mentioned that her members only have to provide their name and email address during registration. Heidi has realized her mistake by not collecting more information: recently a member had a baby, and though Heidi would have loved to have sent her something, she didn’t have the address. The same with birthday’s. She’d love to send her members birthday cards, but again… doesn’t have the contact information.
In further discussion, I mentioned that it should be fairly easy to add additional fields to her registration form, and she then asked me a key question: have I ever used AMember.
Amember, for those that haven’t heard about it, is an incredible tool if you want to run your own membership community. And so, my answer to Heidi was a definate YES, I do use Amember, and I have it set up to collect all the information that I need from my members - including their snail mail address, and birthdate. I was then able to show Heidi how to change her registration form to collect this information from future registrants, and suggested that after she changes the form, she should contact all of her existing members and invite them to update their profiles.
Heidi was already excited about the prospect of SendOutCards and the various ways that she can use the system for both personal greetings, and in her business. One of her concerns was the cost of the wholesale plan, which is $298. In discussing SOC with her, I told Heidi that without a doubt, once she starts using the system, people will start asking her about it, and at the wholesale level, if anyone signs up because of her referral, she won’t make any commission at all on the sale. That would be at least a $120 loss for her, and just one referral would make up the $100 difference between the Wholesale and Entrepreneur plans, without even trying to ‘work’ the SOC business.
Once Heidi started thinking about it, she realized that she knows quite a few people that would be very interested in the system … so which way do you think Heidi will go?
Do you have an opt-in newsletter or mailing list? I would like to strongly encourage you to updating your sign up forms to collect (at the very least) a mailing address. Some people have concerns about asking for birthdates, but I’ve had the birthdate field as a required field in my shopping cart since I first installed it, and now I can add those contacts right into my SendOutCards contact manager and send those people birthday cards, customized just for them!
